The checked blazer upgrades you’ll need this season

Words by Penny Goldstone

The checked blazer trend is nothing new. For the past few seasons, it’s been spotted on the catwalk everywhere from Vêtements to Stella McCartney and Chanel, and on the pavement on the likes of Lily-Rose Depp, Alexa Chung and Pandora Sykes.

Whether it’s a ladylike tweed blazer embellished with pearl buttons or a heritage blazer that’s impeccably cut, you can’t go wrong with this trend. But if you’re looking to give yours a little upgrade for AW18, then I can certainly help, thanks to some key pieces from Ganni, Gabriela Hearst and Maison Margiela to name a few.

Brown is a key colour this season, but we aren’t talking uni lecturer styles here. Instead, look out for premium fabrics and either an oversized shape or 80s-style shoulder pads and a nipped-in waist. On the more feminine end of the spectrum, pastel tones are big news, and I love Ganni’s powder pink and baby blue hues, best worn with a set of baroque pearls.

If you can’t stretch to designer, the high-street game is strong too, with & Other Stories, Zara and M&S serving up some great options.

As for how to wear the trend, you’d be surprised how many choices there are. Of course, there is the fail-safe jeans, T-shirt and blazer combo, but if you’re feeling a bit more daring, I love wearing mine with a slip dress over a cashmere roll-neck, and dressing it all down with some biker boots.

Or you can invest in the matching trousers, if that’s an option, for an office-friendly suit that’s anything but boring.
