Why chunky trainers are the only shoes you’ll need this year

Dad trainers, ugly trainers, chunky trainers – whatever you like to call them, the shoe trend first made famous in the 90s isn’t going anywhere fast. A firm staple with the street-style crew, it has been re-imagined for millennials by the likes of Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Ganni, Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton, as well as the OG sportswear brands Fila, Nike, Adidas and – of course – Buffalo (I hear there’s a Spice Girls reunion happening soon…).

While some dismissed it as a fad, retailers like ASOS and Net-A-Porter saw a huge spike in searches for the chunky shoe style, and this season’s offering is better than ever. It’s official, the slim minimalist trainer is out.

For those of you who were a bit nervous about trying out the trend last season, SS19 is your time to shine. And, don’t worry, the same styling rules as normal trainers apply.

You can go high-low by teaming them with a floral dress or checked suit, channel a nostalgic feel with a denim boiler suit, or pair them with a shell suit for Yeezy vibes. Whatever your preference, here are the best styles to buy now.
